Interesting fact about New Southgate… Friern Hospital (formerly Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum) was a psychiatric hospital in Colney Hatch. The asylum was opened on 17 July 1851 by Prince Albert and was officially referred to as the Second Middlesex County Asylum. At the time of construction, the asylum had 1,250 beds and was the largest and most modern asylum in Europe. In 1973 the number of patients had been reduced with closure in 1993, and the building and grounds were sold to Comer Homes in 1995. The building was converted into luxury flats called Princess Park Manor
